Fitzpatrick Skin Type Matrix.
In 1975, Thomas B. Fitzpatrick, MD, PhD, of Harvard Medical School, developed a classification system for skin typing. This system was based on a person's complexion and responses to sun exposure. Today, this classification system is also used to aid practitioners in the care of their patients. For successful laser and light therapy, it is necessary to determine your correct skin type.
Fitzpatrick Skin Type Description
I Extremely fair skin,
always burns, never tans
II Fair skin, always burns,
III Medium skin,
sometimes burns, always
IV Olive skin, rarely
burns, always tans
V Moderately pigmented
brown skin, never burns,
VI Markedly pigmented black
skin, never burns, always

Poorly controlled Diabetes Mellitus
Peripheral Vascular Disease
Rheumatoid Arthritis/Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis
Subnormal Intelligence or Psychiatric Disorders
History of Postinfammatory Hyperpigmentation
Chronic Disease (Crohn's Disease, IBD, etc.)
Fitzpatrick Skin Type IV or V
Renal Failure (Acute or Chronic)
Certain Medications (i.e. Accutane,)
Collagen Vascular Diseases
